Huawei P40 review: the best compact phone available

Huawei P40 smartphone


In March this year Huawei announced its P40 smartphone, and then launched it last April. The unit is considered to be a P group concentrating heavily on cameras and modern technology, as well as the elegant look.

The design


The phone comes with a curved design on all four sides, making it easy to carry by hand, and the phone weighs 175 g while it is 148.9 x 71.1 x 8.5 mm in size.

From the front you will find a curved glass screen with an integrated fingerprint sensor and a hole from the upper left corner that includes the front camera setting, while from the back you will find a glass layer also with a vertically installed triple camera setup with an integrated flash. 

The volume control buttons with the power button are on the right side, and from the bottom there is an entrance to the two chips or slots, and an external memory + USB-C port + external speaker slot.There is an IR sensor from the top for controlling home appliances.

The phone supports the dust-proof housing IP53 standard, and is available in silver, pink, brown, black , and white.

The Display


The phone comes with an OLED screen of 6.1 inches and a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels with a density of 422 pixels per inch with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and the screen accounts for 86.3 per cent of the device space.

In addition to a refresh rate of 60 Hz, the screen supports the emergence of 16 million colors and, in terms of illumination level, it reaches 590 nits with automatic mode, facilitating the use of the phone in the sunlight.

You won't experience any issues with the screen about colors and sharpness of brightness, however cropping the front camera can cause some users inconvenience.

Camera


The phone has a triple rear camera configuration, which includes a 50-megapixel main camera with f/1.9 lens slot + an 8-megapixel zoom sensor with f/2.4 lens slot + 16-megapixel wide angle camera with f/2.2 lens slot. All in addition to built-in LED light.

The rear camera configuration supports panorama, HDR, and PDAF, and the proximity sensor provides autofocus for up to 10x hybrid zoom.

The cameras are capable of shooting with incredible colors and precision, and advanced imaging technologies are available in low-light or night conditions, in addition to developing artificial intelligence techniques after being taken to eliminate the noise from the pictures.

The rear camera supports video shooting at 30/60 frames per second, up to 4K.

As for the front camera, it is 32 megapixels with f/2.0 lens slot, and supports video shooting at 30/60 frames per second at up to 4K. But front camera is not auto focused.

The Performance


The phone is powered by an octa-core Kirin 990 5 G processor with 7 nm manufacturing technologies, with graphics processor Mali-G76 MP16. The processor is strong enough to deliver outstanding output with the phone for daily use, whether it's playing videos or opening applications.

The processor comes with an 8 GB or 8 GB RAM with 128 GB or 256 GB of internal memory, and the memory can be expanded using memory cards.

The phone runs on the EMUI 10.1 user interface based on the Android 10 OS but bear in mind that Google services are not enabled.

Wi-Fi 802.11, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS, and NFC are also supported.

The Battery


The phone comes with a 3800 mAh battery that gives you 5 and a half hours of operation, and the battery supports 22.5 watts of fast charging that can charge the phone up to 90 percent in an hour.

Price


The Huawei P40 is available for the 8 and 128 GB version at EUR 799, which is roughly $690.
The Huawei P40 is very suitable for fans of taking pictures and professional photography without much consideration for night photography, and the processor also improves overall performance and battery life.
