At least 11 persons killed in Assam landslides

A minimum of 11 individuals, including 5 of a family members, were killed and 7 others injured today in separate landslides in Assam's Barak Valley districts of Karimganj as well as Hailakandi along Mizoram.

In Hailakandi region, two enormous landslides stated five lives in Bilaipur and also injured a six-year-old child in Ramchandi area, region officials reported.

At Bilaipur in Terracherra area under Lala police station 5 persons had been buried alive, while 3 others, along with a five-year-old child, were hurt.

At Ramchandi area, the six-year-old child and four other people were hurt. In adjoining Karimganj district five people of a family members, including 3 children, had been killed in the landslide in Sonachirra because of incessant rains.

The sliding masses of mud fell over the house of the family on the edge of the hill when they were asleep killing the husband-wife duo, their girl and 2 sons, the officials said.

The injured have been admitted to the hospital, officials stated. Continuous major downpour within district hq Karimganj city for the last 3 days has caused water logging in many areas, he said.

Due to major shower in Karimganj the EVM machines of Ratabari and Karimganj North Assembly constituencies happen to be shifted by the district administration to a secure place in presence of all political party leaders, observers, district and Deputy Commissioner as well as Superintendent of Police, DC Manoj Deka said. NDRF and police force were engaged in rescue as well as relief operations.
